After more than 30 concerts and many excellent reviews about their first trio albums “Tales From The Unexpected” and "European Trio", the Italian pianist Enrico Pieranunzi and the Dutch double bassist Jasper Somsen recorded their third trio album with the Catalan drummer Jorge Rossy: “Common View”. The new album is an equal and refreshing collaboration featuring these three masters both as performing artists and composers. Three totally different lives, characters and backgrounds collide as one “Common View”. Release Challenge Records, produced by Jasper Somsen.

COMMON VIEW Pieranunzi CD back cover 2020.jpg

Dream jazz. Italian pianist Enrico Pieranunzi, Dutch double bassist Jasper Somsen and Catalan drummer Jorge Rossy have long honed their craft. They have a vision, the missing ingredient in many jazz albums and they proceed to display it abundantly throughout the Somsen-produced impressionism of Common View.

Pieranunzi has one of the lushest sounds imaginable, in other words his piano playing sings and that is why he is a great. He understands that what he is doing is about the study of touch. Rossy knows about the art of the piano trio through his work with Brad Mehldau and his presence on any record particularly in the context of the classic piano trio is very significant. I am not sure what his secret is. The more I think about it perhaps it is his timing, not in the sense of timekeeping, in the sense of waiting and reacting.

Somsen reminds me of the bassist Christian Spering in other words his expertise is in tonal purity and a full sound. He caresses the sound as it journeys into an inner consciousness of imagination.

Songs, they are so much more than 'tunes' here are: Falling From The Sky, Silk Threads, Sofá, Turn In The Path, Love Waiting Endlessly, Perspectives, Instant Reveal I, Who Knows About Tomorrow, Instant Reveal II, Recuerdo.

World class pianism and the art of the trio, exhibit one. It's been a while since something of this calibre has come along. A beautiful record. SG

Together with bassist Jasper Somsen and drummer Jorge Rossy, pianist Enrico Pieranunzi presents his new record, Common View. And this is piano jazz at its finest, presented in an absolutely noble and sophisticated way. And this is not only thanks to the pianist, because it is the collaboration of the three musicians that represents the intensity in expression. At every moment they communicate with each other to create this collective sound.

"Falling From The Sky", here the title already fits, yes, exactly, as if stars would fall elegantly from the sky and land softly on the earth, this impression is created by the mood at the latest at the end of the song. Very slowly the stars land... That means for me, here the listener gets a lot of information, the possibly unintended associations of each song can be assigned individually.

And at the same time the music baths in many moods, romantic, dreamy, thoughtful, exuberant full of joy, melancholic, all this applies to the overall impression and helps to a cultivated high-class listening pleasure. This is not surprising, since the music is played by experienced musicians, with the Italian Enrico Pieranunzi, a long-time star of the European jazz scene and a very virtuoso pianist, the Dutchman Jasper Somsen on bass, who was also internationally active and, like Pieranunzi, worked with well-known international stars, and the Spaniard Jorge Rossy on drums, who is in no way inferior to his two colleagues in terms of efficiency and experience.

Whether ballad (e.g. "Love Waiting Endlessly"), more avant-garde songs ("Sofa", "Instant Reveal II") or songs with a fast rhythm ("Turn In The Path"), in all cases the interaction of the three is admirable. You can literally feel how they drive each other, form a unity and at the same time keep their individual way of playing. The piano playing, which constantly generates new melodies and sometimes reminds me of Oscar Peterson, the pushing, driving and shaping drumming and the bass player, who cements everything together and also has enough space for his own ideas, together they create this dreamlike mixture of excellent music.
